Black lives matter
-2020-
I had luckily been informed about this project by a fellow local, so I took the opportunity and applied to be a part of this lovely mural. Each artist that applied was given one letter from “Black Lives Matter”. I was given the letter “A” in “Matter”. I chose to do a portrait of George Floyd with tears in his eyes. My goal was to portray the pain he would be feeling watching the aftermath of what had happened to him and the many others before and after him that fell victim to police brutality.
This was the first mural I have ever done. I surprised myself with how it turned out and that I was able to finish it within the 4-6 hour mark. to prepare myself for this mural, I sketched my design and painted a very small thumbnail of my idea a couple of times until I was satisfied with the outcome. then, I went to the paint shop and grabbed the primary colors red, blue, and yellow, and then a can of the shade of pink I needed for the background so I wouldn’t have to mix it on site.
I will admit that there are a couple if things that I did differently. Since the mural was so big, I didn’t realize until the drone photos came out that George Floyd’s head was a bit lopsided on the right side. I also wish I made his head just slightly bigger without cutting off his eyes. I feel there was room to expand the size of his head a little. I also had a hard time just painting my signature on the mural. It looks nothing like my normal signature and I shouldn’t have painted it in black, but rather an off-color from the background. if I was able to make those changes, then I feel it would’ve been perfect.
